I wanted to do a piece inspired by debutantes, as it marks a pivotal moment of change in a girl's life, and yet it is also kind of an outdated tradition that was formed to adhere to a patriarchal society that suppresses women. I have a debutante inside a darker room, looking out the windows and the world beyond. The curtains behind her move in the breeze, adding to the movement of the piece that would otherwise be still. They are the call from the world beyond the room that promises freedom. I also took inspiration, with the curtains, from the great gatsby, and the scene first introducing daisy that gives her entrapped life seem fantastical.
