Come So Far

​This piece is one of my favorites in this portfolio. It is monochromatic oil on wood, a different material than what I usually use, and it was a learning curve working with it because it tends to oak up the paint faster, resulting in less blending. I think it paid off pretty well, however, with the natural grain of the wood appearing in some places like the sky, matching the forested scene. The sky also took inspiration from the symbolist artists Edvard Munch, known for his paintings like The Scream. I wanted to show a scene with a girl, looking back on the journey that she has made to reach the summit of a mountain. You can see the progress you've made, yet there is some underlying anxiety in what comes next, which I tried to showcase a little in the hunched pose and red sky.
