Goin' Up

How do you convey seasons of life or times of change? How do women juxtapose their surroundings/society? These were my two guiding questions of this work. It’s loosely inspired by a scene from the Witches of Eastwick movie. It resonated with me as a time to change, I like to think the version of me in this painting is moving out for the first time, into a new apartment or dorm carrying a bit of home with me (the orchid). For contrasting the environment, I thought it was cool to take this typically pretty drab environment of an elevator, and make it something pretty and pink. To get this new angle I used in the painting,  had my mom take a reference photo of me, something I’ve never done before and it definitely helped.
